The teams of Tony Mason were built on one thing and one thing above all others. Defense. Mason's teams were only ever as good as the defense. John Vitro was a mainstay of Mason's teams along the defensive line and he specialized in bringing a certain level of chaos to the proceedings.
Vitro had a particularly well developed nose for the Football, as evidenced by his standing on the fumble recovery lists on the Bearcats record books. He still owns the records for fumble recoveries in a season (6 in 1975) and fumble recoveries for a career (12).
