Dan Rains was a classic Tony Mason recruit. Big, strong, physical with a nose for the Football. Rains ended his career as a Linebacker, but he was a Running Back in his early years with the Bearcats before switching to Linebacker. Once the position move was made it paid dividends for everyone.
In 1977 Rains was named the recipient of the Claude Roast Trophy , more or less the Most Valuable Player trophy of the Bearcats Football program. He parlayed that success into a couple of All Star Bowls at the conclusion of his season. However Rains didn't get much of a look from the NFL so he went on to play Semi Pro Football for a couple of seasons. He was eventually given a shot with the Chicago Bears and made the team. He eventually wound up captaining the special teams and was a part of the legendary 85 Bears.
