"All the expectations of making all those tackles last year, but we put him in a situation where he hasn’t had to make all of them," Tuberville said. "He’s got other people around him, like (outside linebacker) Nick Temple, and our defensive front has really picked up with stopping the run."
Rutgers received some encouraging news on the injury front when strong safety Lorenzo Waters and running back Justin Goodwin -- two of the four key players listed as doubtful for Saturday when the week began -- were upgraded to probable tonight for the Cincinnati game.
Waters is the key one. He is the only major contributor to last years stellar defense to return this week. Given how much Rutgers has struggled against the pass in recent weeks getting Waters back into the fold would make the task a little bit tougher for the Bearcats.
"As you go through the game, as coaches, we’re responsible to make the right adjustments and make sure the players are in the same spot, and sometimes other things affect the game like turnovers. That certainly can make the game go in a direction you don’t want it go, like Houston did. At SMU we really got through the first three quarters of the game feeling like we played pretty good football and they didn’t finish it the right way in the fourth quarter and had to come back and win it overtime.
"I really didn’t expect it, but I was going to try to be a leader in any way I can," Rubles said. "It means a lot to me because it lets me know that he has faith in me and he believes in me. As a player, that’s all you can ask from your coach."
I would say he deserves it for not shooting a single three pointer through two games.
The Mountaineers, from Boone, N.C., are coached by Jason Capel, who’s in his fourth season. Capel is a former North Carolina star who played for the Tar Heels from 1998-2002 and helped them reach the Final Four in 2000.
The Fighting Camels (2-0) raced out to a 37-21 advantage at the half after connecting on 5 3-pointers. The Mountaineers' (0-2) primary downfall was shooting, as the team was just 1 of 8 from the free throw line and 0 of 6 from three at halftime.
The Bearcats next two opponents.
