Top 10 Bearcats: #7 Zach Edwards

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

The greyshirt freshman from Middletown was a revelation in his first season. He did not begin the season as a starter, but he took the job by force after the Illinois game and never looked back.

There were times in 2013 when it seemed like Zach Edwards was the best defensive back on the team. Better than even multi year starters Deven Drane and Arryn Chenault. There were times when he looked like a freshman, but there were moments where he made plays no one else could make. Not to belabor the point, but Edwards was ridiculously good for a freshman.

Edward's final line for the season

  • 78 tackles (3rd on the team)
  • 2.5 tackles for loss
  • 2 interceptions (tied for 2nd)
  • 1 forced fumble
  • 7 passes defended (most on the team)

Edwards was a revelation for the Bearcats secondary in no uncertain terms. He played that well as a freshman this year in his first extender play. The only other freshman DB that I can think of playing a comparable amount of time as a freshman was Mike Mickens, and he didn't have the impact in 2005 that Edwards had this year. I don't think that anyone but Edwards knows just how good he can be.
