To follow up on the challenge of dealing with Collaros, what do you need to do better to defend that kind of quarterback?
We didn't contain. Even when they did contain, when they brought [Jeff Godfrey] in, he was fresh legged and we were tired legged. We got a little sloppy. We let him out of the pocket on two or three different occasions, where all we had to do was contain him. The rush was coming from the back side and we could have gotten him down and gotten him off the football field.
"They’re big, physical team, but I feel like we’re going to score a lot of points," Hoffman said. "This last week in practice and in the Indiana State game in the second half we were clicking on all cylinders and I feel like our offense is finally coming together. We’re going to protect Zach and he’s going to do a great job. Our receiving corps, all three of our running backs are great. I just feel like we can’t be stopped."
"We are always going to take shots," Jones said. "We threw nine deep balls Saturday. So I think that is your fair share. Now, we have to complete them and we completed two of them. The big thing about our offense if you said what's one area we have to have improvement it is our explosive plays. The first game we really didn't have many plays over 30 yards and the same thing Saturday. Being in a spread offense you need explosive plays. So we have to do a great job of when we call those shots we have to execute those."
Some debut for first-year coach Butch Jones, who considered the offense the strength of the team. After only one game, he's considering changes. Jones might revamp the offensive line for a home game Saturday against Indiana State.
"We may move a few individuals around to different spots," Jones said. "We're going to open up the competition again."
With 9:22 left in the second quarter, UC had outgained Fresno State, 195-27, in total offense and appeared on the way to an easy win.
By the end of the game, the Bulldogs had 296 yards to 234 for UC.
The offensive and defensive lines, along with the linebacker corps are presenting Jones’ biggest worries. The defensive line, he said, is a "major concern."
"That’s why we’re searching for defensive linemen to step it up and play," Jones said. "That’s why we’re putting a lot of pressure right now Roney Lozano, the freshman from Miami. He’s got to step up and be able to give us some reps."
"He’s pretty fast," Johnson said. "But a lot of people get it mistaken at the conference he played at. Was it the Big Ten? They’re a slow conference. They don’t have fast guys in that conference. It automatically makes him look like he’s a real fast guy."
