Wide Receiver | Lettered 1983-86
Jason Stargel is a second generation Bearcat. His father Willard was a star for the Bearcats before and after World War II and was a member of the 1946 team that went to the Sun Bowl, though Stargel himself never played in the game. It was a condition of invitation that Stargel, a black man, would not play in the game. A vote was taken and the decision was to play the game. All these years later its a subject that still sits badly with a lot Bearcat fans.
For all the hurt feelings Willard had no problem sending his son to Clifton to play Football, and play Jason Stargel did. Stargel played on teams that didn't win a ton of games. But the problems went beyond wins and losses. There was not consistency from the coaches, he had two in four years of playing. Still for all the turnover Stargel, Danny McCoin and Reggie Taylor is arguably the best QB/RB/WR trio in UC history. Stargel was an honorable mention All American following the 1986 season.
