As is so often the case with projecting high school offensive linemen to the college game Callahan is in for a position change. He played at right tackle for Liberty High School just outside of Columbus, but his future at this level is at guard, and that is where he has been working throughout fall practice.
Like all high school offensive linemen Callahan will be taking a red shirt this year to get bigger and stronger. But it is going to be equally important for Luke to become more flexible. At times last year Callahan played a little high and a little stiff, which meant that he resorted to throwing his defenders as opposed to finishing blocks. There are several plays where he engages defenders, keeps his feet moving, his pad level low and powers them into the ground. Its not that Luke can't do it, but he needs to be more consistent with his footwork and keeping his pad level low. Improving his flexibility will help a great deal with that.
Luke Callahan has a good chance to be a contributor for the Bearcats down the road because he plays with a kind of physicality that you love. He always works hard to finish his blocks by putting his man in the dirt. But he needs to marry that martial spirit with better technique to become an effective college lineman for the Bearcats.
