Tion Green came to Cincinnati from Sanford, Florida where he attended Lake Brantley High School. Green was a three-star recruit and was offered by the likes of Louisville, Temple, Purdue, and many other before choosing the Bearcats as his final destination.
Green showed up on UC’s campus in 2012 and would slowly increase his roll in the offense to become a consistent presence on the field for his final two years as a Bearcat. Green found a role in his sophomore season, rushing for 412 yards and seven scores, but lost out on being a force in 2014 when his season was cut short by an injury. He waited with a redshirt during that season and came back to post his best season as a Bearcat, rushing for eight touchdowns and 729 yards on 151 carries.
Green got most of his success running the ball straight up the gut, using his strength and his 230-pound frame to push around defenders, which had a lot to do with his ability to get into the end zone and the fact that he recorded 910 yards from scrimmage during a down 2016 for UC’s offense.
The Best of the Best
October 10, 2013 vs. Temple
Green had his breakout game with two touchdowns and 91 yards on 18 carries as the Bearcats ran away for a 38-20 victory.
September 5, 2015 vs. Alabama A&M
The Bearcats kept the ball on the ground for most of the game in a 52-10 win to start the 2015 season. Green led the way for the Bearcats with 17 rushes for 127 yards and a touchdown. It was his lone career 100-yard rushing performance. Green could have had a much larger game but UC lightened up in the second half once it had a safe lead and coasted to a win.
November 25, 2016 at Tulsa
In Green’s final game as a Bearcat, he paid his respects to a former UC star running back, Isaiah Pead, who was involved in a car accident just days before the Tulsa game. The accident caused Pead to lose a part of his leg, ending his NFL career. Green wore his Bearcat uniform in his final game with Pead's name and his No. 23 on his jersey. It was a very cool gesture from Green to pay his respects to one of the best running backs in UC history. Green also added 67 yards on 14 carries, although UC ultimately lost in overtime.
A Final Goodbye
Green worked with a number of talented backfield mates including Hosey Williams, George Winn, Jameel Poteat, Ralph Abernathy IV, Rod Moore and Mike Boone, but few of them had the consistent staying (and punishing) power that Green possessed. His downhill running style will be missed as UC moves into a new era for the program.
