Cobb to Work Out for the Celtics

According to Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders, former Cincinnati guard Farad Cobb will work out for the Boston Celtics as part of the lead up to the NBA Draft.

Like fellow Bearcat Octavius Ellis, who got a workout with the Washington Wizards last week, Cobb is not expected to be drafted. If he were, it would be in the late stages of the second round. That's perfect if the Celtics are thinking of taking a flyer on the 6-foot-1 guard as Boston has five picks in the second round, not to mention the three it has in the first.

Another reason the Celtics may be looking at Cobb, and others like him, is the fact that they are in desperate need of shooters. Boston finished 28th in the NBA in 3-point percentage (.335) last season, despite ranking 11th in 3-pointers attempted (26.1 PG) and 13th in 3-point attempt rate (.293). Cobb evolved into a knock-down 3-point assassin as a senior, drilling 39.4 percent of his attempts from long range this past season. He showed an ability to not only drain shots in catch-and-shoot situations but in transition and when creating his own shot. His size may work against him, as his frame falls more into the point guard role, a position he is not accustomed to playing, but his shooting skills could make up for that.

A drawback to taking Cobb would be the crop of players Boston already has at the guard posts. Aside from All-Star Isaiah Thomas, there is also Avery Bradley (an All-NBA defender), Marcus Smart, swingman Evan Turner and developing (and recently drafted) prospects James Young and R.J. Hunter. Plus, it remains a mystery what Danny Ainge will do with the picks and not just in terms of who he will select.

For now, we'll just have to wait on ordering that Cobb Celtics jersey until after the NBA Draft, which will be held on June 23 in Brooklyn.
