This one started pretty badly.
The Cincinnati Bearcats’ women’s basketball team fell behind 23-2 after one quarter. The 20th ranked Temple Owls spent the rest of the afternoon in cruise control. Temple ended up winning by a final score of 88-64.
Cincinnati fell to 16-12 with the loss and 7-8 in the American. Temple moved to 22-6 with the win and 12-3 in the conference.
The game was a homecoming for UC star and Philadelphia native Shanice Johnson, who led the way for the Bearcats with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Freshman guard Sam Rodgers contributed 13 points off the bench for the Bearcats.
Junior forward Tanaya Atkinson buried Cincinnati all afternoon, posting 30 points and 13 rebounds. Junior guard Alliya Butts scored 23 points for the Owls while senior guard Feyonda Fitzgerald posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 assists.
Major contributing factors to Temple’s win were their excellent three-point shooting (10 for 25) and dominance on the boards (41-27).
Cincinnati concludes their regular season at home on Monday night against the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes. The home game against the 8-20 Golden Hurricanes offers a great opportunity for UC to end their regular season on a positive note before they enter the AAC tournament next week.
