Normally we would save this sort of highlight for Bearcats in the Big Leagues, our weekly check-in with former Cincinnati Bearcats in professional baseball. Here’s this week’s episode.
But on Saturday something happened that couldn’t wait. Ian Happ made his MLB debut for the Chicago Cubs and it was a fine one. Although the Cubs fell to the rival St. Louis Cardinals 5-3, Happ went 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and, most importantly, a home run. Here’s that dinger in all its bombastic glory.
Happ, who was drafted ninth overall in the 2015 MLB Draft, made a swift ascent to The Show, mashing his way to Triple-A in 2017 where he slashed .298/.362/.615 with nine home runs and 25 RBI in 26 games (104 at bats). Its unlikely that he will remain up with the big league club all season, but it was a great showing for his first run in the bigs.
