A few quick picks for Saturday:
California at North Carolina: Former UNC forward Bones McKinney not only played at UNC. He also played at NC State. And he coached at Wake Forest! He sure was a busy fella in the 1940s. Bones McKinney was a Lowland, North Carolina man. That’s not far from Pamlico Sound. Not far from New Bern either. Bill Bunting, who starred for the Tarheels in the late 60s, is a New Bern man’s man. Ambrose Burnside spent the summer of ’63 there. New Bern is where they invented Pepsi too. A good place to go if you’re thirsty. A city where they invented a famous soda that is. A city that’s not all that far from Lowland, which is where Bones McKinney is from. He had a lot to do with a lot of different schools in North Carolina.
Final Score: UNC 38 Cal 22
NC State vs. South Carolina (Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte): I’m not a drinker myself, but when I’m in the Queen City I like to unwind with the Brew Bus of Charlotte. There are a few tours to choose from and some shuttle options too. It’s a four hour, three brewery tour that includes behind the scenes looks at the breweries. You also get to enjoy one pint at each brewery and a couple of craft beers along the way. I don’t drink. I just like the socializing. I bring some barbeque chips and a cream soda and I’m all set, thank you very much. For those on a budget, you can also choose the sampler tour which is just three hours but is also a great way to tap into Charlotte’s emerging brew culture. Get it?
Final Score: NC State 42 South Carolina 23
Northern Arizona at Arizona: RichRod is sick of football. He has spent every evening this off-season at the Tucson YMCA and remade himself into a Division 1 basketball prospect. He has become a consistent low-post scorer and rebounder. What he lacks in outside shooting skills, he more than makes up for with his intense focus in man-to-man defensive situations.
Final Score: Arizona 45 Northern Arizona 31
