In Memoriam: Keith Jackson

The man who taught me about football

Keith Jackson passed away this morning at the age of 89.

Keith Jackson was my mother’s favorite announcer. She always says that Keith Jackson taught her the game of football. She learned the intricacies of the sport from him on fall Saturdays during her youth.

Keith Jackson became my favorite announcer too. He did the same for me as he did for my mother. From the late 1980s until his retirement in 2006, Autumn Saturdays with Keith were one of the axes around which my year was built. There is nobody I enjoy watching a football game with more than my Mom and there is nobody I enjoy calling a football game more than Keith Jackson.

I watch as much football now as I did then but nobody has replaced Keith. Nobody can replace Keith.
