The Cincinnati Bearcats women’s basketball team survived a scare against 12th seeded Tulsa, winning 66-65 in American Athletic Conference (AAC) Quarterfinal action. Tulsa had knocked off 5th seeded Houston on Saturday. They nearly knocked off the 4th seeded Bearcats on Sunday night.
UC advanced to today’s AAC semi-finals against UConn in harrowing fashion. After trailing for virtually the entire evening, the Cincinnati Bearcats took a 66-65 lead with 4.6 seconds remaining.
Senior point guard and co-captain Ana Owens hoisted in a layup which gave the Bearcats the lead. Cincinnati hung on defensively for the win, placing the Bearcats in the AAC semi-finals for the first time.
Senior co-captain and forward Shanice Johnson led UC in scoring with 17 points. Sophomore forward Angel Rizor added 15. The victory improved Cincinnati’s overall record to 19-11.
The Bearcats return to action this evening at 7 PM against the undefeated, number 1 ranked UConn Huskies at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
