2019 will be the 124th edition of the Battle for the Victory Bell between Cincinnati and Miami Ohio. The Bearcats have won 13 in a row, with Miami’s last victory coming back in 2005.
The last time Miami won, the world looked quite different.
Here is a look at some various topics, some related to UC, some not, of what the world looked like back in 2005.
Cincinnati Bearcats athletics
In 2005, Cincinnati was wearing Nike jerseys in their second season under head coach Mark Dantonio, playing in their first season in the Big East.
Since 2005, Cincinnati has had:
- Five football coaches (Dantonio, Brian Kelly, Butch Jones, Tommy Tuberville, and now Luke Fickell).
- Two conferences (Big East, American Athletic Conference)
- Three apparel providers (Nike, Adidas, Under Armour).
Mick Cronin was a year away from becoming the men’s basketball coach.
Luke Fickell was in his first year as Ohio State’s Defensive Coordinator and one of his players was LB Marcus Freeman (now UC Defensive Coordinator), who was a redshirt freshman.
Prior to 2005, Cincinnati played in 8 bowl games. Since the start of the streak in 2006, the Bearcats have played in 10 bowls in the last 13 years.
Miami athletics
2005 was the 12th consecutive winning season for the Redhawks (finished 7-4). In the 13 seasons since, they have just one winning record (10-4 in 2010).
They have played in just two bowl games during this lost streak.
Current coach Chuck Martin was an assistant coach at Grand Valley State, coaching under head coach Brian Kelly and Offensive Coordinator Butch Jones (both, obviously, future Cincinnati head coaches)
College Football
Nick Saban was head coach of the Dolphins
3 of the top 4 teams in Mountain West Conference were TCU, BYU, and Utah (all elsewhere now).
Colorado and Nebraska finished 1-2 in the Big 12 North and Missouri finished 4th (all elsewhere now).
In addition to Cincinnati playing their first year in the Big East, so did Louisville and South Florida (all three left Conference USA). Temple was kicked out of the Big East (due to performance and attendance) prior to 2005 season.
In 2005 there were 28 bowl games. In 2019, there are 40 bowl games.
That season ended with the historic Texas over USC Rose Bowl National Championship victory.
Cincinnati pro sports
Bengals made the playoffs for the first time since 1990 in Marvin Lewis’ third season as head coach.
Reds finished 73-89 and had an outfield of Ken Griffey Jr, Adam Dunn, and Austin Kearns
