Cincinnati will enter the 2013 season opener against Purdue with a lot of talent in the back end of the defense, and just as many questions. This is a group that has two players with starting experience, and a whole bunch a guys who have played as situational reserves.

Starters

LC -- Deven Drane; LS -- Arryn Chenault; RS -- Andre Jones; RC -- Trenier Orr; NB -- Adrian Witty

This is, perhaps the most talented starting unit since the 2008 group. Drane is a legitimate NFL prospect, Chenault was revelatory in his first season as a full time starter. I wouldn't be shocked to see him make a leap similar to the one that Aaron Webster made from his junior season to his senior. Orr was very impressive in his red shirt freshman season, and I love Adrian Witty as the nickel. This is my guess on who starts the Purdue game, but there is a ton a flexibility with this group. Drane has played field and boundary corner, not to mention nickel and a few snaps at safety. Chenault can play either safety spot, Orr could slide to nickel and Witty has played safety and corner, though his best spot is probably nickel, where he can put his sternum breaking physicality to more frequent use. This is a really talented group of starters, but there is no escaping the youth, which puts a premium on down to down consistency.

Back Ups

LC -- Howard Wilder; LS -- Kevin Brown; RS -- Marcus Foster; RC -- LEVITICUS PAYNE*; NB -- Darren Doston

This is my hunch for the back ups. The worrisome thing is that only two of these guys have game experience. Kevin Brown and LVITICUS PAYNE were the only freshmen DB's to play last year, the rest of these guys have never played FBS football before. That is less of a concern for Doston and Wilder who played in the talent rich JUCO leagues in California, but there is still a big step up from that level to FBS football. Keep an eye on Braxton Lane too, he is new to safety, but he has phenomenal speed and range.

The Bearcats boast one of the best starting groups of linebackers in the American Athletic Conference. Greg Blair and Jeff Luc are legitimate NFL prospects, and Nick Temple has started the last 20 plus games. The starters are as good as they get in this conference. But there are questions about the depth.

Starters

WILL -- Jeff Luc, MIKE -- Greg Blair; SAM -- Nick Temple

The only thing that will stop this group from taking the field as a unit would be an injury. Blair is basically unassailable, Luc is playing slightly out of position* but he ended any semblance of competition. Temple is just as safe as the other guys, his coverage ability, coupled with his newfound disruptiveness -- 3.5 TFL, 1 Sack and 2 passes defended over the last month of the season -- gives the Bearcats a ton of versatility.

WILL -- Clemente Casseus; MIKE -- Solomon Tentman; SAM -- Corey Mason

If that Injury comes the Bearcats could be forced into a position of depending on a walk on to produce. The Bearcats have done that before, but its not what anyone would consider ideal. Of the three back ups Tentman is the most ready. He is fully healthy for perhaps the first time in his Bearcat career and could capably fill in for Blair if need be. Casseus is a walk on, but the dude can play. He played in 11 games last year as a walk on, and almost came up with the play of a lifetime in the Belk Bowl. Alas his scoop and score was ruled an incomplete pass. Regardless I think Casseus is capible of doing a reasonable Jeff Luc impression. Mason is a talented guy for a walk on, but the gap between Temple's skill set and his is perhaps the biggest. It is easy to under estimate the value that Temple's multifaceted skill set brings to the defense, it also makes him very hard to replace.

The key to the Bearcats in 2013 is the defensive line. There is promise, and potential yes. But there are also big questions about the depth at key positions, and whether or not the transfers, JUCO and otherwise, can make an impact on the season.

Starters

LE Silverberry Mouhon, DT Marquise Aiken, NT Jordan Stepp, RE Brad Harrah

Keep in mind that this is who I am projecting to start the Purdue game, and just the Purdue game. The two surprises are the Marshall transfer Aiken and Harrah. I think that those two are better every down fits for this scheme than some of the people they are competing with. Harrah is going to be battling Jerrell Jordon for that starting spot. I like Harrah to start, he has the size at 6'5" 260 plus to be a force as a run stuffing strong side defensive end. Harrah isn't exceptional at any one thing, but he has all the tools in the tool box, thats what makes him valuable. Aiken is a one gap DT and he is very disruptive, a quality that was lacking last year with Wolfe and Hughes plying their trade in the NFL. I am not sure that some of the other DT options can bring that disruptiveness to the position.

Ends Rotation

Jerrell Jordan, Terrell Hartsfield, Josh Posley

Jordan and Hartsfield are the guys that everyone will be keeping an eye on. Some time in a college strength and conditioning program has surely added some weight to their frames, but how much. In an ideal world one of these three will become a situational pass rusher to replace Harrah on obvious passing downs. Posley doesn't have the height or the long arms that are ideal for the position. But he is relentless and he played quite a bit as a true freshman.

Tackle Rotation

Brandon Mitchell, Cam Beard, Adam Dempsey, Mitch Meador, Alex Pace

At some point one or more of these guys will be knocked out of the rotation, the question is who. Beard was a starter last year, and was a great fit for the horizontal style of play that UC employed under former DC's Tim Banks and John Jancek. The new one gapping approach isn't so obviously in his wheelhouse. Dempsey played a ton last year and is back. The wildcard for me is Alex Pace, he has the highest ceiling of any of UC's tackles, the only question is whether or not he can put it all together. If he does it in camp I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see him make a run at starting

This is the one position where I don't expect much to change between the start of camp and the end of it. These were basically the top 10 coming out of spring. What will be interesting is how a rotation shakes out. Bujnoch, Sprauge and Longo are all graduating this season. There is a chance that Lefeld could bolt early for the NFL too, he is generally regarded as one of the top 15 or so tackle prospects in the country. Staying a year would probably help his draft stock, but if he is flawless all season his stock could sky rocket. In which case UC goes from having their bookends in place in 2014 to returning just 1 starter. That's obviously suboptimal, so the guys in the second group need to get meaningful reps this year to make their transition to starting easier.

The Bearcats receivers are long on talent, but short on proven projection in 2013. With the rotation likely to be shortened by one or two guys there are a ton of wide receivers competing for limited spots.

Starters: Alex Chisum, Chris Moore and Anthony McClung

Rotation: Jeremy Graves, Nate Cole, Max Morrison and Shaq Washington

That is my guess on how the depth chart will look like. Its hard to overstate just how much potential that starting three has. There may not be a Mardy or a Binns among them, but they have all shown flashes, even if they have never really put it together for a whole season.

Chisum was brilliant as a freshman when he usurped D.J. Woods role late in the season and went on to catch 19 passes for 302 yards and a pair of scores, a pair of deeply impressive scores. But he battled injuries and inconsistency as a sophomore and he only wound up catching 9 passes for 140 yards as Damon Julian took over the role of field stretcher in chief.

Moore was a parade all american who looked like he was on the way to a really nice freshman campaign. Then he got injured and took his red shirt year in 2011. He played sparingly last year, but he really made an impression when Brendon Kay replaced Munchie Legaux. Moore had big TD's against Temple and in the Bowl Game, and he came up with THE catch of spring football to boot. He looks primed for a big year.

Anthony McClung personifies the issue with this group. There is no question as to their capabilities, they can do the job. But can they, as a group or as individuals, put it together for an entire season? That is the question of record for these guys.

The 2013 will mark the return of an old species, one that is going rapidly extinct, the Fullback. It has been six years since a fullback was spotted in the wild in the queen city. No one knows how it will take to the new turf at Nippert.

Tight End

Starter: Blake Annen

Back Up: DJ Dowdy

Only two, or maybe three guys will be listed on the weekly depth chart, but I expect far more to play on a week to week basis. Dowdy is the athletic successor to Adrien Robinson and Travis Kelce. But I don't know that he can unseat Annen before the end of camp. In time Dowdy will become the main guy at TE, it will probably happen before the end of the year. But Annen has value as a blocker and is a better receiver than he gets credit for. The two wild cards at TE are Patrick Coyne and Travis Johnson. Coyne is more of an H-back, but he is an explosive athlete. Johnson might just be the most physically gifted TE to come to UC. He could very well redshirt, but he might be too good to keep off the field.

Full Back

Starter: Jared Golden

Back Up: Deionte Buckley

Golden took control of the job in the spring, and he will certainly be the full back when UC choses to go big, but Buckley is going to have a roll as a ball carrier. He will not be the main option to run the football, but he will get touches. Any offense that choses to use a fullback has to make the defense respect that position as a threat, otherwise there is no point to having a full back on the field. Buckley is such a threat, in a way that Golden is not. Lonnie Pryor is a good frame of reference for the role that Buck is supposed to play.

We are all just a little over 30 days away from the start of the college football season. What better time than now to take a crack at projecting the Bearcats depth chart for the Purdue game. This time it is the running backs.

Starter: Rodriguez Moore

Back Up: Ti'on Green

To be fair, the starter designation will be basically meaningless in this offense. Eddie Gran made his bones as a recruiter and as a running backs coach before coming to UC. So he likes to have a big stable of backs rather than finding one guy to ride for the year. In the last five years only one back has had more than 200 carries* in a season under Gran, and that was Monterio Hardesty at Tennessee in 2009. In Gran's three years at no one had more than 133 carries in a season.

*Isaiah Pead logged 237 in 2011, George Winn racked up 243 last year.

My expectation is for that general trend to continue here at UC. The only way that I see that changing is if Ti'on made the leap over the summer, or if one of the JUCO's exceeds the already considerable hype. If that happens my bet would be on Moore because he seems to have the most complete skill set of anyone on the roster, and because he can generate big plays in bunches. Call it a hunch, but I think those big plays are going to be needed this year.

Ralph David Abernathy IV isn't listed as a starter or a back up, but that doesn't mean he won't play. He will, a lot. But I don't think he is going to have an easily defined position in this offense because he will play all over the park (as a soccer fan would say). I just don't think he is going to have a ton of touches from the RB spot. It would be surprising to see him top last years 69 rushes. Don't forget about Deionte Buckley either. There are a lot of different options available to Gran. But he needs to figure out what he wants to do in general, and then decide who is most capible of doing it. I have no idea where Eddie Gran is in that process.

The players report for camp on the 4th of August, the first camp of the Tommy Tuberville era starts on the 5th. In a little over 39 days the Bearcats will kick off against Purdue and embark on the 126th season in program's history, and the last to take place in pre renovation Nippert. All of that makes this the perfect time to take a deep and prolonged dive into the murky pool of depth chart projections.

Starter: Brendon Kay

Back Up: Bennie Coney

Almost any pre season publication or hastily compiled internet preview that could be found or picked up this summer has included a line like this. "Brendon Kay replaced an Munchie Legaux towards the end of last season, but the two will compete for the job in camp." There is a competition in the sense that Tommy Tuberville declined to name a starter coming out of spring ball, but the two quarterbacks are not on even footing.

How could they be? Munchie has a great deal of talent, but his consistent lack of consistency was the Buzz Killington of the Bearcats in 2012. I am sure the experience was rather funny for the odd person with an abnormally sardonic sense of humor, but it wasn't much fun for the rest of us.

The simple fact of the matter is that Munchie Leguax wasn't one of the two best quarterbacks this spring, and he won't be on opening day either. Brendon Kay and Bennie Coney were and will be against Purdue. Coney in particular is the guy to watch this year. Keep in mind that the last UC QB to start every game in a season was Dustin Grutza. In 2005. Chances are Coney will see significant action, and possibly start a game or two this year. Somehow in the all the furor surrounding Gunner Kiel and his transfer he has been forgotten. But he could have the chance to end the battle between Kiel and himself before it even begins.
