Coming into today's game the Miami Redhawks had allowed 633 yards per game in two contests against Marshall and Kentucky. They held UC to 369 yards, thats 147 yards under the Bearcats average. How did they do it? By moving their linebackers off the line of scrimmage.

It seems counter intuitive that backing the linebackers off would improve the performance of the defense. But it does, particularly against an offense like Cincinnati's which is ostensibly a pro style attack with an emphasis on the run game. But that is not always the case.

Moving their linebackers off the line of scrimmage does a couple of things. 1) It made it harder for the Bearcats offensive linemen to bump up to the second level of the defense on their blocks. UC uses a ton of combo blocks were two linemen block one until the defensive linemen is secured. At which point one lineman peels off to the second level. Backing the linebackers off the LOS makes executing those techniques harder. Not only does the lineman have to go further, but he has to hunt the linebacker down and block him in space. Its a block that good a offensive linemen should make, but increasing the distance between the lineman and the point of contact ratchets up the difficulty level. Couple that with the stellar play of Austin Brown in the center of the redhawks defense and what you get is linebackers running free against the run.

2) Miami took Dayonne Nunley, by far the best defensive player on the RedHawks team, and made him their play-maker in chief. He is, by definition, a corner back. But he played most of today in the middle of the field about 8 yards off the line of scrimmage, in the middle of the field, beneath the two deep safeties. He essentially played as a robber the entire game, snuffing out routes in the middle of the field and playing downhill in run support. He would up with 10 tackles on the day, but his impact was even larger than that.

Cincinnati played badly on offense. The offensive line looked disjointed, the backs struggled to run through contact and Brendon Kay looked shaky. But Miami came to play with a great gameplan and they executed it to perfection on defense. Not so much on offense, but that defense looked better than they have in a couple of years.

Coming into the 2013 season everyone, myself included, was touting the Bearcats front as one of the best in the country. With four games under their belt it might be time to revise those expectations. Doubly so after today's performance in Oxford.

I generally despise the rush to judgment that comes to writing about football. With basketball there are 30 games full of data to parse for meaning. With football you have 12 games, maybe more. So each data point takes on greater significance, and there is a general favoring of recent events compared to season long averages. That is why I don't like to make expansive judgments early in the year. But I do feel comfortable with this.

Cincinnati's offensive line is not as good as anyone thought it was. At least not yet. The statistics so far aren't pretty. In three games against FBS defenses UC has run the ball 131 times for 567 yards. Thats can average of 4.3 yards per carry. The Bearcats are simultaneously running more than at any point since the Minter era, and being less effective doing it. Thats what the stats say, but there are caveats to that.

For a start the Bearcats scheme is complex up front. There are a lot of moving pieces and techniques to master. My hope from the start of the season was that the Eddie Gran would pick a handful of his favorite schemes and stick with them. That hasn't really happened, or that isn't what it looks like to me. UC's protection schemes are expansive, there are about a dozen of them at the least, possibly as many as 15 or 16. That is a massive change from the Jones, Bajakian scheme which had three run schemes and two or three pass protections. Its an overlooked facet of the game, but it is clearly having an impact with the Bearcats performances this year.

The other factor is that Dan Sprague's absence has been huge. Deyshawn Bond has looked great at times, and like the red shirt freshman that he is the rest of it. Bond really struggled against Miami nose tackle Austin Brown today. So much of the Bearcats running game depends on UC getting vertical push on the interior of the offensive line. Brown was often left one on one with Bond and he was very disruptive for the Redhawks. He really keyed their performance today. The thing about Bond is that he is still just a young buck playing the most mentally demanding position in the sport outside of quarterback. The learning curve is steep, but he is clearly ahead of it.

UC will take the bye week to do some self scouting. They will go over every single frame of film they have and make decisions about what works for the offense and what does not. I would expect that the playbook will be whittled down substantially. The Bearcats under Gran strive to be a multiple offense, and a bye week isn't going to change that. But its clear at this point that they need to refine their focus to put the big guys up front in a position to succeed. Particularly with Aaron Lynch and South Florida being next on the docket.

Oh, and UC won 14-0

That. Was. Not. Fun.

Way back on Monday I made an allusion about the RedHawks channeling Akron. Miami did just that. They came into the game with a great gameplan for getting a win, they then played inspired football to come very, very close to pulling it off.

No doubt about it, the Bearcats played badly today. At least on offense, where they looked sloppy and disjointed from the start. The defense was stellar, as you would expect, but they still had some scares. But the Miami defense which had been shredded in loses to Air Raid based attacks in Marshall and Kentucky took the fight to UC all day.

Hats off to Miami, but the Bell stays in Clifton where it belongs.

its here

This game is about opportunity. Its a chance for the Bearcats to get out of the non conference at 3-1, which has been par for the course for UC of late. Its a chance for Miami to gain some momentum and improve on what has been an admittedly dismal start.

But its a rivalry game, with a trophy at stake. While the programs have certainly diverged over the last decade (UC is 8-2 against Miami since 2003) there should always be a place for this game in the Bearcats schedle. So many long standing rivalries have fallen by the wayside, including the Bearcats other rivalry with Louisville. UC has been a conference nomad for so long, but this game has stayed put. It should still be in the schedule going forward.

Blogging is a lot like dating. You go out there and try some shit out to see if you like it. If you like it you keep repeating it, if you don't you try something else. Today I am trying shit out, namely predicting a player to have a break out game today

D.J. Dowdy

Dowdy is the pick for me for two reasons. The Bearcats are probably going to get big a bit more than usual. To date the Bearcats have rarely gone with two tight ends at the same time, but I would guess that changes this week. I think that Eddie Gran and co. keep it on the ground for the most part.

That will open up the play action game for the tight ends. Blake Annen has played very well so far, and Travis Johnson burned his red shirt last week. That gives the Bearcats three really talented tight ends to throw at the RedHawks, but this is the game for Dowdy to shine. Bennie Coney is going to get plenty of live reps with the 1's this week. Dowdy and Coney had a good connection going in the spring, today is the day that connection comes back to the fore.

Don't forget to check back in after the game to mock me for my choices, because this is the Internet, and mocking is what its for. Mocking and developing human capital, but mostly mocking.

The Least You Should Know

The Bearcats head north to Oxford for a contest with Miami. On paper this game will not be close, UC simply has too much offense and too much depth not to win. But we all said the same thing two weeks ago, and that did not turn out so well.

Miami has changed their offensive tack from a year ago. With Zac Dysert they spread the field with receivers, gave the ball to Dysert and had him make plays. This season sans Dysert and Nick Harwell Miami is running a version of the flex bone made famous by Paul Johnson. But they don't look particularly comfortable doing it, at least they didn't against Kentucky. They can have success with that approach in conference play, but it will be harder against UC than against MAC school X.
