Wrapping up the weekend's action in football and setting the table for the week to come.

Wrapping Up SMU

UC holds off SMU's late rally, wins 28-25 || Cincinnati.com

UC rushed for just 16 yards in the first half, then rushed for 147 yards after halftime. "It’s really a testament to our O-line," Kay said. "I told them in the second half, ‘We’re on your back.’ They really took that personally and they got the job done."

With recovery underway, Barr on-field with UC || Cincinnati.com

Barr, wearing his jersey No. 5, walked hand-in-hand with fellow game captain Greg Blair to midfield. It was Barr’s first appearance at Nippert Stadium since the Sept. 21 auto accident that killed UC freshman offensive lineman Ben Flick.

Cincinnati 28, SMU 25: Bearcats Excel On Both Sides To Claim Victory || Cincy on the Prowl

In the end, Cincinnati was tested against an offense that is capable of scoring several touchdowns per game and came out on top. That was one of the biggest question marks heading into this game. The last time they faced an offensive of this caliber (Illinois), the Bearcats were torched to the tune of 45 points. The fact that UC held a similarly dangerous offense today to just 25 points is very, very encouraging as Cincinnati heads into the most critical portion of their schedule.

Well, not that encouraging.

Bearcats Keep Rolling, Beat SMU 28-25 || Bearcats Blog

The defense had some issues. They gave up 451 yards to the Mustangs. Garrett Gilbert was 38-47 for 403 yards and 2 scores. He also ran for a score. He picked apart the UC defense all day long. It wouldn't be surprising if he was drafted.

But that is 38 yards under their season average, so that's something.

Five thoughts: SMU drops to 3-5 after loss to Cincinnati; bowl hopes in jeopardy || Dallas Morning News

The Mustangs should beat Uconn and South Florida over the next two weeks, which should get them to 5-5. But if SMU wants to get back to a bowl game this year, it will have to upset either Houston or UCF later this season. In order to become bowl eligible, this team must win six games.

Looking Ahead To N.C. State

The Wolfpack, from the Atlantic Coast Conference, will be the first team from what is now a BCS conference to play at Fifth Third in November since UC lost to Arizona State at home on Nov. 21, 1997.

That seems excessive.

Big Second Half Leads NC State Past Appalachian State, 98-77 || Backing The Pack

Then NC State scored 31 points over the first eight minutes of the second half to put the game away. The Wolfpack led by 27 with 11:46 remaining thanks to that incredible outburst of scoring, and from there it was all academic, no matter how angry Jason Capel decided he felt about any given thing that happened. This isn't the best N.C. State team of recent seasons, but this is still a good team that will give the Bearcats a lot of problems, even though the game is in the friendly confines of Fifth Third Arena.

As redshirt decision lingers, Morman sits out for UC || Cincinnati.com

UC coach Mick Cronin said Morman didn’t play because he’s trying to decide if he will redshirt this year, which apparently is Cronin’s recommendation. "He and I are talking about it," Cronin said. "He knows how I feel, but it’s his decision."

Not entirely sure what I think about this. It seemed that Morman was the most athletically prepared of the freshmen, but there is no denying that he is raw.

A deeper look at the boxscore from the Bearcats 28-25 win over the Mustangs of Southern Methodist in a game that saw a whole lot of offense without much scoring. As always the official box score can be seen at GoBearcats.com.

As one would expect in discussing a game that had just over 900 yards the offense is the starting point. Between Brendon Kay and Garrett Gilbert there were 79 pass attempts and only 14 incompletions, and three of those were drops from receivers. Adding in the two interceptions from Kay and the ball hit the ground just 9 times. That is hard to do against air, so yeah, plaudits to both quarterbacks Gilbert in particular was basically flawless.

As the announcers kept bringing up Gilbert is a guy who has been around the block a bit. After all the chaos and controversy he is nicely rounding into the kind of player everyone expected him to be when he was a consensus top 10 recruit for Mack Brown.

Gilbert didn't do anything super flashy today. He only pushed the ball deep a handful of times, once on the the evil post/wheel combo to Darius Joseph, once on a deep shot to Keenan Holman and a third on a deep misfire to Jeremy Johnson. For the most part Gilbert sat in the pocket and took what they Bearcats gave them, which was the short stuff over the middle.

SMU smartly took those yards that were offered, and they took them with gusto. In the final analysis three different wide receivers topped 100 yards*, two of them going over 10 catches** as well. As maddening as that approach can be, its what the Bearcats will continue to do on defense with the high powered passing games of Houston and Louisville fast approaching.

*Johnson, Joseph and Holman

**Johnson and Joseph

That approach from the Bearcats was not really a surprise. Art Kaufman and Co. had plenty of experience playing these kind of games in the Big 12. UC remained content to concede small chunks of yardage between the 20's confident in the defenses ability to bow up in the red zone when the field compresses and the spaces get tighter. As it turns out that confidence was well placed. In six trips into scoring position* the Mustangs kicked three field goals, missing two of them, and scoring touchdowns on the remaining three. This is the one game in which, for once, the other team played worse on special teams than the Bearcats did.

*Generally defined as the defenses 35 yard line and in

If you are looking for a singular difference in the game, the Bearcats performance in scoring position is probably it. In UC's five trips into scoring position resulted in three touchdowns, a Tion Green fumble and UC running out the clock to finish the game. UC was simply better with their scoring chances, and they not SMU got the explosive plays that resulted in touchdowns.

It greatly helped that the Bearcats were able to finally run the ball with some consistency, though without much explosiveness, in the second half. It shortened the game up, but it also kept the ball away from Gilbert, and partially contributed it Gilbert brief rocky patch in the third quarter when the SMU offense just could not find any consistency. Hosey Williams came back this week and delivered when Tion Green opened the door for him with that fumble.

It remains to be seen if this Bearcat team will be able to run like this when they have to against a better defense like Rutgers or Louisville. But considering just how spoty the running game was in general through the month of October any improvement, not matter how incremental is welcome. This was not a work of art, but any game where you can finish -3 in turnover margin and mange to win is a gift from the Football Gods and should be celebrated as such.

This is not usually a subject that bothers me, and complaining about it makes me feel far older than I actually am, but the UC students have gone from being an impactful part of playing at Nippert to a being an actual punchline in just a couple of years. And don't think the players haven't noticed.

The hash tag is apt, and particularly droll when you consider that this student section was given a whole lot of love from ESPN who ranked it among the 20 best in the nation back in August. Which is now hilarious.

I kind of got the amazing disappearing crowd for the Purdue game where UC was comfortably in the lead from the offing and the temperature flirted with triple digits. But this is happening every game, regardless of the time of kickoff or the margin of the score on the board. The entire student section leaves at halftime and, they never ever come back.

I have heard many a student complain about how UC has been screwed over by the powers at be in recent years. But here is the thing, it is hard to take all those claims about the Bearcats "deserving" a spot on the table when shit like this keeps happening. If you want the part you have to act the part, and this student section is becoming a bad clown. There is one more game left at Nippert in its present configuration, and this same shit will almost certainly happen for the Louisville game on national TV, during the one game this year where the Bearcats are guaranteed a big audience. I can't wait to field an avalanche of tweets about this during that game, should be fun.

It was not a work of art, far from it in fact. But a win is a win, and the Bearcats faint hopes for yet another 10 win season and a share of the conference remain alive.

SMU certainly made sure that the second half was nervy, and it makes me very worried about the next two contests, let alone the Keg of Nails. On a couple different drives it looked like the Bearcats had finished the Mustangs off, but they kept responding in the fourth quarter in particular. Garrett Gilbert looked the part, as did their receivers.

There are warts with this team, that much is clear. The defense is far too willing to concede free yards for the sake of preventing big plays. When the offense has to run the Football they struggle to get it done. And there is a general lack of willingness and or ability to go for the throat when the opportunities are there. But 7-2 is, something that I would have accepted at this point back in August, however begrudgingly.

The Cincinnati Bearcats are sitting at 6-2 with four games to play. Their chances for an American Athletic crown, however slim, are dependent upon winning today's game against SMU.

This will be the first real test of the season for the Bearcats defense which ranks among the elite in most statistical categories, but has not faced an overabundance of competent offensive play. SMU's Run N' Raid offense packs a punch to be sure, and the Bearcats relatively thin secondary will be tested from the onset.

The good news is that the Mustangs defense is as bad as the offense is good. In the chance that the bottom falls completely out for the UC defense the offense should be able to keep pace with Brendon Kay throwing to this deep, talented wide receiver core. This has the makings of a shootout, and UC hasn't had one of those for a while.

Everyone is on the Bearcats bandwagon for the day, no one is particularly happy about it. Alot of nervous expressions throughout Bearcat land.

RepublicOfCinicnnati: Our defense will be tested, but Kaufman's schemes will prevail. Gilbert is the best QB that we've seen year to date, but he won't be able to make completions on his back.

The offense continues to improve, with Luallen playing a more significant role, giving the team the one-two punch that they expected from Kay & Munchie.

Bearcats put away the last team that they're "supposed to beat" and head into the gauntlet for a meaningful bowl game.

Matt DuMont: Is everyone else as worried about this game as I am? Thinking back over the last few years, I don't think any of these players have defended an air raid offense. Where this really hurts UC is in the linebacker core. SMU is going to use 4 or 5 wide receiver sets on each play, meaning one of the Bearcats linebackers won't be in on every play. The play of Blair, Luc and Temple has been a huge key to the defense so far, this is worrisome to me.

The good news is that SMU's defense is getting shredded at an incredible rate. They're giving up 44 points a game, including surrendering 49 to Temple in their last game.

I'm going to optimistically pick the Bearcats 44-41, but I really think it could go either way.

Jeff Gentil: This team is such an enigma. They look awful on the road no matter who the opponent. But when they play in Nippert they are completely different and I think that holds true this weekend. Brendon Kay has had a couple extra days to get healthy and he'll need to be healthy to sling it around 50 times Saturday. Bearcats hold off SMU in a highly entertaining game (maybe not as entertaining as the Rutgers-SMU awesomeness) by a 38-31 score

bearcatlair: UC 42, SMU 28. Pretty good offenses without much in the back 7 defensively but Nippert Stadium really is a home field advantage whether it is full or not.

Justin Post: This game absolutely terrifies me. The Bearcats have faced only one offense ranked in the top 70 this year (Illinois). SMU has a top 20 offense. While it's true our beloved Bearcats are a different team at Nippert, I just don't have a good feeling about this one. If SMU pounded the ball on the ground all day, I'd feel a lot better. They don't. Hate to be the Debbie Downer of the group, but I'm going to say the 'Cats lose 38-33.

Matt Opper: It is almost always a gross oversimplification to say that a game comes down to a single factor. The Bearcats can not afford to turn the ball over at all against the Mustangs. SMU has managed to play pretty competitive football this year despite routinely getting hammered in turnover margin. For the year they are -10, and in their three wins they are -6. Ending up on the wrong side of the turnover margin could give a moribund Mustangs defense a bit of confidence, and their offense a short field to work with. I think the Bearcats keep it clean on offense and Brendon Kay outguns Garrett Gilbert and the Bearcats win a fun game 45-35.

What was, at first, a bit of a one game fluke is now something different. All season long the Cincinnati Bearcats have been struggling, and I do mean struggling to run the football. So Eddie Gran has called on Jordan Luallen to give a boost to the running game, and boost it he has.

A picture is worth a thousand words, graphs are worth slightly less. This is the distance of an average rush for each of the Bearcats games to date.

Northwestern State and Temple are clear outliers, and they should be. One is an FCS team that played far above its weight class, the other is simply a bad team at defending the run. The trend line is clear, and it is going the wrong way. The only good run defense the Bearcats have faced this year was Memphis, and even with the four rushing touchdowns the Bearcats had a bad day on the ground, the worst since Connecticut in the regular season finale of 2012.

The problem is a simple one, when the Bearcats try to get big and run the football they can't. When everyone knows its coming they can't do it, when the down and distance dictate a run they can't. The popular scapegoat for that has been the use of Ralph David Abernathy IV in the running game. But the truth is that it doesn't really matter who is running, this team can't go with two backs and run the ball with success, even if it is Tion Green in the backfield.

The running game with the big personnel just isn't working, and everyone gets some share in the blame in that. From the bruised, battered and inconsistent offensive line to the running back's everyone is culpable. Eddie Gran knows it too, which is why Jordan Luallen who was invisible in September has taken on a larger and larger share of the running game through the wildcat package.

Wildcat

All Other Rushes

Temple

6 attempts, 59 yards

36 attempts, 146 yards

UConn*

13 attempts, 52 Yards

23 attempts, 85 yards

Memphis*

16 attempts, 55 yards

25 attempts, 53 yards

* Luallen is also 5 of 6 for 72 yards and a TD

The returns for the Wildcat are diminishing, but are still far better than what they Bearcats are getting from the conventional running game. 4.7 yards per carry (in the Wildcat) being obviously superior to 3.3 yards per carry (in any other personnel grouping). None of this will be a problem against SMU, as their defense will likely inflate the Bearcats numbers to some degree, but it matters down the line.

UC is at best two or three years from being able to put on a performance in the running game like Stanford did against Oregon, or that Alabama does every damn day. That is what Tommy Tuberville wants, and that is what Eddie Gran will want if he is still around. Until that point the Jordan Luallen is going to continue to feature in the Bearcat attack, and thats good because he is as close to a sure thing in the running game as the Bearcats get. The problem is that he only has five more games to play.
