Cincinnati has won six straight games against increasingly competent competition. After last weeks demolition of Rutgers the Bearcats moved just outside the top 25 in both the coaches and Harris polls.

The question is how much will the Houston win, the Bearcats sixth straight, goose their ranking with the voters. Here are the current results of the 12 teams that received more votes than Cincinnati in either the Harris or the Coaches Poll. Losses from two or three of these teams are a must for the Bearcats to move into the top 25.

Northern Illinois -- Beat Toledo 35 - 17

Louisville -- Beat Memphis 24 - 17

Well, OK then Greg. But if he cane get his defense to play at the same level they showed off today against Houston he can say anything he wants. This is shaping up to be the biggest battle for the Keg of Nails in the history of the Keg of Nails. It seems likely that both teams will be ranked for the first ever Keg of Nails with both teams ranked.

Tony Miliano's struggles is just the tip of the bearcats special teams problems | Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

One of the defining characteristics of the Brian Kelly era wasn't just the outstanding offense. The special teams were consistently excellent and turned quite a few games. Bearcats won the Big East Special Teams Player Of The Year in each of Kelly's seasons. But that proud tradition is meaningless now, because the Bearcats special teams are terrible right now.

The most obvious problem is the play of Tony Miliano. In August he was named to the Groza Award watch list, a short list of the best place kickers in the country. But this year Miliano has turned into an abject disaster. He is now 5 of 14 on the season on field goals, has had two kicks blocked with a long make of 44, which is a career low. What started as a minor consistency issue has blossomed into a full throated slump, and it is hard to figure how to stop it. It seems likely that Tony will keep the job for the next two games, but beyond that I have doubts.

I am expecting Andrew Gantz to take over place kicking duties from Miliano next year, and there has to be some popular opinion on the 8th floor of the Lindner Center as well. Its hard to envision a world in which this staff, who inherited Miliano will carry any faith at all in him into next season. Miliano could turn it around in the off season. Maybe he will clear his head, get refocused and win the job in the off season. But he has to prove it, and Miliano probably knows it.

As funny as this is going to sound, the Bearcats could survive Miliano's bad play if they could get something / anything from the return game. Honestly the coverage has been generally excellent and John Lloyd and Brendon Kay give the Bearcats competence in the punting game.

But UC can't get a thing going in the return game, and it is costing them game after game in the field position battle. It might just be time to retire the concept of Ralph David Abernathy IV being a difference maker in the return game. He hasn't returned a kickoff for a TD since the Liberty Bowl. His yards per return has gone down in each of the last two seasons and the Bearcats average field position is probably better if he takes a knee every time.

UC has shown that they can win on two phases alone in this winning streak, but they have been so bad in that phase of the game it seems miraculous that they keep grinding out these close wins. Special Teams play has already cost them one game this year against USF. For the rest of the year I don't even care about winning on special teams. I would settle for breaking even, but even that might be a bridge too far.

The Cincinnati Bearcats went into Houston and picked up a 24-17 win. It was not pretty, oft chaotic and a heart attack waiting to happen. But these are the kind of games that the Bearcats always managed to lose during the Butch Jones era. These Bearcats escaped with win number 9.

The final margin was 7 points, but the Bearcats dominated large swathes of this game. UC out gained Houston by nearly 300 yards (573 for UC, 278 for Houston), averaged 6.3 yards per play compared to 3.8 for Houston. But turnovers coming from uncharacteristically bad decisions from Brendon Kay kept the Cougars closer than they should have been.

Houston turned the Bearcats over three times inside the Bearcats 20 and directly handed the Cougars 14 points. The Cougars had a grand total of three drives that went for longer than 32 yards and scored all of three points on them. Houston had no business making this a game, but the Bearcats made it one for them with an uncharacteristically sloppy fourth quarter. Still, win is a win, and I will take 9-2 going into the Louisville game.

prove it.

A lot of the Bearcats goals for the season are still in sight, how ever dimly. They need help, yes, but they also need to win. Winning has become something of a habit after a rough start to the year. The vintage performance against Rutgers inspires hope that yes, indeed this team has turned the corner. But it is still far to early to know for sure. This team needs to show more, and doing so on the road, at a weird venue, with a weird start time against a team they haven't played in a dozen years...that. That would be showing something more

The Houston Cougars are the most complete team the Bearcats have faced to date. Their offense is generally excellent, as is usually the case. Their defense is much improved and they have some of the best special teams that the Bearcats are likely to see this year. So how exactly do the Bearcats go about winning this game?

Make A Special Teams Play

The Bearcats have been dreadful on special teams all year long. The coverage has been alright, and John Lloyd has been surprisingly good at punter. But the kicking game has been a disaster as Tony Milano has taken a massive step back this year in consistency. On top of that the Bearcats have gotten nothing from the return game this year, or either of the last two years really. A non offensive TD is asking a lot of this group today, but they have to break even with the Cougars for UC to walk out of BBVA Compas Stadium with the win.

Beat The Blitz

Houston's defense is in many ways a perfect compliment to their offense. Like their offense they attack from the outset, putting pressure on the opposition to operate their normal plan under extreme duress. When it works they get to the quarterback and affect his throws before he can find the seams in the defense. It can be very difficult for an offense to get into any sort of rhythm against the Cougars, ask UCF or Louisville.

Most teams blitz with five, and play a conservative defense with three underneath defenders and three deep defenders. Thats not what the Cougars do, they have no problems sending 6 or 7 defenders and betting (often correctly) that they get to the QB before the QB gets to them. Brendon Kay has been stellar against the blitz all year, that has to continue. This is going to be a rough game for him, he will get hit early and often, but he has to keep the offense in some sort of rhythm beating their pressure scheme. Blitzing UC into submission is plans A through D for Houston. UC has to find a way to neutralize their pressure.

Get Off The Field On Third Downs

The Bearcats defensive approach to Houston will probably mirror their approach to SMU. The philosophical underpinnings between the two offenses are different, but the end result is similar. UC struggled to impact SMU at all for long stretches of the first half, but when they did they often forced third and longs, and the Mustangs converted time and again on those third and longs.

There are plenty of reasons to think that it will be different against Houston. John O'Korn is very good, but he is still just a freshman and makes plenty of freshman mistakes like staring down his receivers and forcing throws. My read on him is that he is far more likely to get caught trying to play hero ball than Gilbert was, and as such is less willing to live to play another down. Houston is a very average third down team this year, it would greatly help if they were bad today.
