Back/Coach | Letters 1933-36 Coach 1945-48

Ray Nolting was the first real star of the Cincinnati Bearcats Football team. The squad had been in existence for neigh on 50 years but the team and the program never seemed to penetrate the consciousness of anyone beyond Cincinnati until Nolting came along.

Nolting was a local kid, graduating from Hughes High School he entered UC in 1932 before sitting out the then customary Freshman season. Upon entering the fray he became a star for the Bearcats. In fact he became the first Bearcat to be named to an All American. Nolting went onto a career with the Chicago Bears sharing the backfield with Bronco Nagurski before coming back to UC to coach the Bearcats for four seasons leading the Bearcats to their first ever Bowl Game, the Sun Bowl against Virginia Tech, a game the Bearcats won. That 9-2 season oin 1945 proved to be the high water mark of the Nolting era as Sid Gilman replaced him and immediately raised the standard of Bearcats Football.
