Defensive Back | Lettered 1995, 1997-98

Before there was Mike Mickens there was Shawn Ferguson. In most cases it is pure folly to describe year to year progression, or in this case era to era progression, in evolutionary terms it does on occasion make sense. This is just such an occasion.

Ferguson was a blanket corner during the first peak of the Minter era. And he turned in some truly phenomenal games for the Bearcats most notably against Memphis in 1997 in which he intercepted three passes and returned two of them for scores and compiled 123 return yards on the night. Ferguson remains the only Bearcat ever to record two pick sixes in a single game and those 123 interception return yards are also a single game record. He and Mickens share on other similarity, they stand atop the career pick six chart with three apiece.
