Quarterback | Letters 2005-08

Sports have a way of generating tragic figures thats really unlike anything else. Its an oversimplification to say that circumstances conspire on the individual more than in life. Every program has its own variant on the tragic figure, Grutza is the Bearcats.

A guy who came to the Queen City from Maysville with dreams of leading the Bearcats to great heights saw that vision come to fruition, but he did so from the bench. Grutza on the sideline, injured when Nick Davila wrote the script to the biggest win in school history. He was also there to get pipped, twice in consecutive years. Grutza did have his moments. In 2006 he played brilliant football against Virginia Tech and Louisville in close losses. And he did come off the bench to deliver against Louisville and Hawaii, but he watched other guys take his team and ride off into the sunset with them.
