David Letterman and the University of Cincinnati Bearcats

How Chuck Hoard Inspired a Running Gag

David Letterman - the king of late night television - is retiring, and while he has very little to do (if anything) with the UC Bearcats, Dan Hoard has brought us a funny story about how David Letterman once made a series of Chuck Machock* jokes on his show.

*Chuck is a color commentator for UC Bearcat Basketball games on 700 WLW

The story goes: Chuck Machock got so fed up with the referees during a UC basketball game, that he started to actually yell back to the referees, making obscene comments and questioning about every call that the referees made. Eventually, the refs had enough and threw Chuck out.

Dan Hoard got front row tickets to The Late Show with David Letterman many years later, and Dan made the best of his opportunity by suggesting that Letterman join him during the 2010 Big East Tournament as a color commentator because of Hoard's partner's propensity for getting thrown out. David Letterman thought that this was the funniest thing in the world, and made it the gag of the night.
