A tribute to Phi Slamma Jamma

Derik Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

I don't know why we have to go play Rice every year. The Owls never looked as good as they did in the 80s with Akeem Olajuwon, Larry HolmesDave Thomas, and Juventud Guerrera.

Using a combination of streetball wisdom and old-fashioned class, Phi Slamma Jamma defeated Cincinnati 14 times during the 1985-1986 season.

Bearcats legend Nick Van Exel had this to say about the 1985-1986 season; "I never played against Houston. I didn't even go to Cincinnati for four years. I was twelve years old or something."

Repeatedly, Mr. Van Exel corrected me, saying that Phi Slamma Jamma was a Houston, not a Rice thing. I corrected him back every time. And shouted. Loudly. I think I won the argument.
