Linebacker | Lettered 1994-97

The first recruiting class of any coach is the most important. It can be hard to make up ground if the foundation is laid wrong at the start. Rick Minter got that first class right as the class of 1994 became the foundation for the 1997 team which ended the Bearcats ridiculous bowless streak which at the time was 47 years long an counting by the time Curry was a Senior.

Curry was in that first class and he, alongside Brad Jackson and Hassan Champion helped mold one of the better defenses in the country. The linebacking core was a big strength of the Bearcats and the defense was built around that group. They were all good but Phillip Curry was the best of the bunch and the most consistent ripping off one 100 tackle season after another. His 487 stops are the second most all time.
