Are we really sure that John O'Korn is the guy for the Houston Cougars? I know that he had a great season as a true freshman last year. He was easily the best freshman in the conference and one of the best in the country as a passer. But there were a lot of things that I didn't like in the Cougars season opening flop against UTSA. In particular his tendency to stare down his receivers and pay way too much attention to the pass rush. O'Korn was better against Grambling, but he still looked jittery as can be.
That's not what the Cougars need though, they need consistency and mistake minimized production from that spot. There is enough talent around O'Korn for the Cougars to be a good offense if they can get last year's play out of JOK. Deontay Greenberry is probably the best receiver in the conference*. They have a good back in Kenneth Farrow and an offensive line that should be better than it has shown thus far. They just need more from O'Korn.
* The Bearcats have the best receivers in the conference, but unless Chris Moore or Mekale McKay explode this year Greenberry has the belt
Because here is the thing, lost in the embarrassment of the defeat to the Meep, Meep brigade the the defense is very good. Basically everyone is back, and they have played like a group that is very comfortable with their scheme and what they are doing. But you can't continue to put that group in these terrible short field situations and expect to survive them. We will find out a lot more about the Cougars when they travel to BYU tonight.
