The American Athletic Conference’s Top Five Fight Songs

If you’re making a college football playlist, these songs need to be included.

The American Athletic Conference hasn’t been around long but it is home to some of the best fight songs in college football. Here are my five favorite:

5. Navy: “Anchors Aweigh”

Charles A. Zimmerman’s “Anchors Aweigh” is one of college football’s most majestic anthems, a stirring Edwardian tribute to the Midshipmen. Its trademark soaring horns are a battle cry worthy of the U.S. Navy.

4. Houston: “Cougar Fight Song”

The Spirit of Houston Cougar Marching Band thunders out the drums every time in this jaunty fight song. As Houston’s marching band hammers out the fight song, they always look resplendent in their red and white uniforms. When I close my eyes and envision a marching band, it looks a lot like Houston’s.

3. UConn: “UConn Husky”

Full of flourishes, stomping percussion and good cheer, the “UConn Husky” is the perfect song for a football Saturday. The sing-along section of UConn’s fight song is well-suited to crowd participation.

2. Memphis: “Go Tigers Go”

Teleological as all get-out, Memphis’ fight song sounds like a victory in the making. Every time I hear “Go Tigers Go,” I am ready to let out a cheer for Memphis.

1. Cincinnati: “Cheer Cincinnati”

One part Sousa. One part “Beer Barrel Polka.” The Cincinnati fight song is a gift from the gods. “Cheer Cincinnati” combines instrumental pomp and a sense of human jubilee like few songs in college football.
