Cincinnati Bearcats Basketball Recruiting
More on the Devon Scott Commitment
Last night Devon Scott broke the news of his own commitment to UC on twitter.
Soon after everyone started dropping stories about it. Scott is something of an unknown in recruiting circles. He spent a couple of years basically as Jared Sullinger's understudy at Northland. But for all the attention and hype that surrounded the Vikings program the offers weren't exactly flying fast and thick at Scott. At the time of his commitment his offers came mainly from the likes of Akron, Miami (OH) and Wright State. While he had issues getting offers, he had plenty of attention.
The prevailing consensus is that Scott was about to blow up in terms of offers after a great spring on the AAU circuit. Here are some highlights from a recent (May 21st) AAU tournament. What I see is a guy who is literally a perfect fit Mick Cronin. From day 1 Mick recruited defense first and Scott with his athleticism, and strength will be a top shelf defender. He is decently skilled on offense, he can shoot a little bit, dribble a little bit and attack the basket alot. He is the type of big man that doesn't need the ball to be effective, he can operate outside the realm of the offense and still chip in with some gimme buckets. That's a Cronin style big man. Yancy Gates is an outlier, it seems like guys like Steve Toyloy are more of his comfort zone. Links to his scouting profile(s) and some more highlights after the jump.

Cheikh Mbodj Commits to the Cincinnati Bearcats
UC has been in the running for a JUCO big man for quite a while. The current class is heavy on wings and guards with one post player. That player, Octavius Ellis is a couple of years out from being productive in the Big East unless he can do the little things as well as Justin Jackson did this past season. Still a front line of Jackson and Yancy Gates and maybe Kelvin Gaines would be incredibly thin for this conference. So another big has been a priority, and that big was always more likely to come from within the JUCO ranks than from with out. Most of the conversation for that spot has centered around God's Gift Achiuwa. Achiuwa visited UC last weekend, but didn't pull the trigger on the offer. He is going to take visits to Washington and St. John's before making a decision. That timetable wasn't congruent with Cronin's because he pulled in Cheikh Mbodj today. While he doesn't register anywhere near as high on the spectacular name scale, he is a similar player in terms of dimensions and athletic ability, even if he isn't quite as polished offensively. The other really interesting thing, at least to me, was that the player that Mbodj is likely replacing in the lineup, Ibrahima Thomas, is someone who shares the hometown. Granted there are a lot of people are from Dakar Senegal, but still.

Jeremiah Davis Commits To Cincinnati
Well at least there has one bit of good news for UC today. Jeremiah Davis a 6'2" 200 pound Shooting Guard out of Muncie, Indiana committed tonight. While Davis is from Muncie he preps at Huntington Prep In West Virginia. Huntington Prep is like Findley Prep in Las Vegas, they are stacked with division 1 prospects and they play a national schedule while attending a local school, in this case St. Josephs Central Catholic in Huntington West Virginia.
Davis is a three star with rivals and scout. He is the123rd ranked player and 39th ranked SG in the nation according to rivals. Scout ranks him as the 41st SG. I like Davis a lot. He is a pretty good offensive player, he has a nice handle and a good understanding of the game. His shot is decent, but he won't really stretch defenses with his perimeter shooting. Where he really stands out is on the defensive end where he is a suffactating one v one defender who plays the passing lanes very well. He is also a good rebounder for his size. All in all a good get for Cronin. Youtube after the jump.
